The Math&Marvels ZOOM program
is one of the best ways to encourage students to take their math seriously and to see the connections between what is known as "The Universal Language," and their beloved pop-icons. Especially the superheroes!
This is not about tesselations; it's about everyday math that students will, and must use, in the real world.

" The students are engaged, motivated and learn so much from Jerry’s presentations."

What's Covered in this 45-Minute Program?
THE FUN PART -
STUDENTS WATCH AS I CREATE THEIR FAVORITE SUPERHEROES IN REAL-TIME USING MATH!
STUDENTS WATCH AS I CREATE THEIR FAVORITE SUPERHEROES IN REAL-TIME USING MATH!
GEOMETRY
Students will be shown the connections between simple geometric shapes and the superhero using the rectangle and its 3-dimensional cousin the rectangular prism. The larger rectangular prisms are used for the chest and pelvic area of the superhero figure and cylinders are used for his/her appendages - the arms and legs.
Students will know how OBTUSE, ACUTE and RIGHT ANGLES are incredibly important to get a comic-book's environment to look just right. Done right, you can get a convincing cityscape, done wrong, you get a scene out of The Matrix or Dr. Strange. Then again, if Dr. Strange is what you're looking for, then "wrong" is "right." And how often in math is wrong right? Sounds more like art. |

RATIO/PROPORTION & PERSPECTIVE
Students will also discover how these geometric shapes relate to perspective and how when perspective changes, proportions change. And the best part is, you can "squeeze" your preferred superhero into these wonderful shapes to give a dynamic feel to the story.
Students will also learn that what looks to be a hairbrained puzzle like the picture above with the many boxes in it, is nothing of the kind. It's not a 1000 point perspective problem, it's only a 3-point perspective problem. And then we move on to FRACTIONS! Students will be shown a simple 1/2 method that when applied to our friendly geometric shapes, can give us The Mighty Thor, or any favorite superhero they can imagine. |
FRACTIONS
From Math to the Majestic Mighty Thor!
ALGEBRA & PERCENT
And yes, students will even learn about how indispensible that dreaded "A" word is, ALGEBRA, when laying out a comic-book page. No kidding!
Each participating school will be mailed, at the expense of the artist, one autographed 8.5" X 11" original sketch of the Principal's favorite superhero, OR, one full-color, signed and dated giant print from any of the samples found on this PAGE.
